You just never know. In May 2005, while fishing off the coast of Cancun, out of Puerto Isla Mujeres Resort & Yacht Club, Bob Roscioli had a very successful day of fishing. About to call it a day when, in 72 feet of water, Bob Roscioli sent down a live 5lb yellow tail on a 30# test line. He knew something big was down there but didn’t know what. All through the day yellow tail were being attacked close to the boat.
Within minutes he hooked up on what appeared to be something VERY large. After a fight of about 14 minutes, Bob realized what he had was a Black Grouper weighing in at approx. 120 lbs. With assistance from Captain Sharky, this enormous Grouper was finally in the boat.
The fish was immediately put on ice and they headed back to the marina. As they pulled into their slip, they noticed that the locals had begun coming down to the dock to meet the boat as well as did other owners, captains and crew from local boats; a crowd soon had gathered. Sailfish is the usual prey of choice this time of year off the coast of Cancun, so understandably it was said more than once that this was the largest fish seen in Isla Mujeres!
Photographed with his catch are Bob Roscioli of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, owner and President of Roscioli International, Inc., builder/manufacturer of the Roscioli Donzi Sportfish yachts and Captain Sharky from the Florida Keys.
After returning from Cancun, to Fort Lauderdale, the photos were shared with professionals and local tackle shops –the general consensus is that this is possibly a World Record!
